CryoLIFE (Hong Kong)

CRYOLIFE is the first Private Cord Blood Bank in Asia, and it is owned by Cell Therapy Technologies Centre Limited (CTTC), established in 1996. We believe in the potential of stem cell therapy in the field of reparative and regenerative medicine, and encouraged by the proliferation of successful cord blood transplants in the US, we decided to introduce the concept of saving cord blood to the local community. Our mission is to serve the community's needs in cord blood storage by providing the best-in-class cord blood collection, processing and storage services, and continuous improvement in cryopreservation technologies.

On 1 January 1998, CRYOLIFE was officially launched as the first family cord blood storage program in the Asian region. As an industry forerunner, we boast a few records which have set us apart from the competition. Now:

  • We manage the largest cord blood inventory of over 15,000 units in Hong Kong,
  • We are the first cord blood bank in Hong Kong accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the highest professional standard recognized by the industry worldwide,
  • We are the first cord blood laboratory in Hong Kong practicing automation in processing which will maximize the recovery of mononuclear cells (MNCs) in cord blood processing,
  • We have a dedicated transport team equipped with a temperature controlled cell safe to ensure the viability of client’s cord blood during transportation from the hospital to our laboratory.

In 2009, we take the lead to launch the CRYOmatch service and invest to set up a HLA Typing database (HLA stands for human leukocyte antigen). This service will ensure our customers and potential patients can have fast-action sample compatibility and matching, and improve the probability of successful transplant therapy; and eventually, it can help contributing to the application of cord blood to the community. In addition, in September 2009, Cryolife arranged the first patient from Hong Kong suffering from cerebral palsy to receive experimental treatment involving the transfusion of her own cord blood.

Cell Safe Cord Blood Bank (Egypt)

At the end of year 2007 the death of one of the partner’s colleagues from leukemia due to failure of finding a matching stem cell donor, the idea of creating this service in Egypt was raised.

By 2009 the company created a law that was approved by the ministry of health in Egypt in order to allow private doctors to open a cord blood bank. The company is composed of a group of lab doctors as well as oby/gyn. They created this bank using the latest technology found worldwide in the field of cord blood separation and storage. The system used is a fully automated system both in separation and storage.

Cell safe bank is a private cord blood stem cell bank created based on the fact that Egypt suffers from leukemia cases among different age groups with no stem cell data base nor banking available and based on the fact that bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from HLA-identical sibling donors has been successfully utilized in the treatment of high-risk or recurrent hematological malignancies, bone marrow failure syndromes and selected hereditary immunodeficiency states and metabolic disorders we created the first private stem cell bank in Egypt.

Use of allogeneic BMT has been limited both by the lack of suitable donors, and because of the risk of life-threatening complications that arise when donor and recipient are not immunologically identical, namely, graft failure and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

In an attempt to increase the availability of suitable donors and reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, clinical investigators worldwide have evaluated umbilical cord blood as an alternate source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for transplantation.

In Egypt as the only licensed service available is the private family banking yet no public stem bank policy is introduced , cell safe has created the first private cord blood stem cell family bank as a start to introduce the concept of stem banking in order to make it routine practice and create later on a national stem cell bank with a HLA data base as the potential benefits of banked umbilical cord blood include: 1) absence of donor attrition, 2) rapid availability, and 3) minimal risk or inconvenience to the donor. Additional advantages which remain to be determined include: 1) low risk of transmissible infectious diseases, such as cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus, 2) lower risk of acute and chronic GVHD as compared to unrelated-donor marrow transplants, and 3) ability to tolerate HLA mismatched transplants.
